(wikipedia and MoMA really sum it up the best.)
please feel encouraged to brainstorm alternative ideas to the game. at our inaugural session, i suggest playing the original game, dividing it between drawing and writing as necessary (it might also be fun to mix those two categories). participants are encouraged to write down variations of the game and place into the coffin, er, suggestion box. we can spend a little time brainstorming new versions at the end of the initial evening.
bring supplies! large pieces of scrap cardboard in good condition, magazines, fabric scraps- bring things to inspire. i suggest, based on space limitations, that we limit the size of the final works to 11"x14. we could even bring our own scrapped drawings and paintings to work on, odd posters to paint on, old game boards to collage on- be creative and resourceful. bring supplies for you child as well, as we will have a game going with the sitter for the kids.
we shall begin each evening with an icebreaker game- charades, telephone, pictionary, cards against humanity- to get warmed up. please be on time (or as early as 5:30), because we are paying the sitter beginning at 6pm. the party officially begins at 6:15. please have your child ready to play with the others as early as possible so that you have time to eat a bit before getting the game under way. drinking and light bites are welcome inside the salon; please enjoy messier foods in the kitchen or outside.
6:00 pm: sitter arrives, children and parents settle in and eat.
6:15 pm: icebreaker game
6:45 pm: Cadavre Exquis
the sitter will begin to put the children to bed around 8:30. we can make it a semi-sleepover by bringing jammies and blankets, etc. guests are encouraged to stay after the sitter leaves for the evening at 10, though not much later than midnight. we can adapt to timeframes in an organic way; however, i think that most of us don't enjoy being hungover and sleep deprived on our days off with our children.
please consider bringing a shareable amount of your usual friday night dinner (pizza, store made chicken, etc)- please don't slave over the food. just bring enough to share, some reusable containers, and help tidy up after. please don't bring fast food! we'll plan to have some food to share, simple things like bread and cheese, fruit, vegetable crudités. i usually prepare a healthy sweet- macaroons, black bean brownies, banana bread- for the kids that is nutrient dense. if your child has any dietary restrictions, please bring what she or he can eat. many of my creations are vegan and gluten-free, but I can't guarantee that each time. if you can give me a text about dietary restrictions, I will do my best to accommodate. i can't guarantee a large spread each time, so plan accordingly.
John and I are looking forward to this. I hope you are too.
